How Does Dental Insurance Work?
Many people believe that dental insurance is virtually identical to traditional medical insurance, but this isn’t true. Medical insurance is meant to cover the cost of BIG events, such as a serious injury or illness, while dental insurance emphasizes the value of prevention by fully covering routine dental checkups and cleanings and providing partial benefits for more involved care. This approach is designed to keep serious dental problems to a minimum and help patient save money in the long run.
All plans come with a yearly maximum, which usually ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 – this is how much your provider will pay out before you become responsible for all costs. But what exactly can this money be used for?
What Your Dental Insurance Plan (Usually) Covers
It’s important to keep in mind that every dental insurance plan is different, so please confirm your available benefits with the provider before committing to a treatment plan. Our team can also help with verifying coverage on your behalf! In most cases, though, patients can expect the following:

Routine preventive and diagnostic care are typically covered at 100%.

Basic restorative procedures like fillings, extractions, and root canals have a majority (usually 70-80%) of their cost covered.

More extensive restorative procedures (such as dentures, dental bridges, and crowns) have around 50% of their cost covered.
Please keep in mind that cosmetic/elective procedures are virtually never eligible for dental insurance benefits. Also, there may a deductible that you have to pay before your benefits kick in, although this monetary amount is often waived for preventive care.
We Offer In-Network & Out-Of-Network Savings
An “in-network” dentist has agreed to charge negotiated rates for certain services, and most patients can expect to pay less as a result.
What if your dental insurance isn’t on the list, though? That isn’t a problem at Ideal Smiles Dental Care. As long as your dental insurance allows you to select any dentist, you can still become our patient and take advantage of your available benefits through claims that our team members will file. While she will technically be an “out of network” dentist, it’s important to remember that in many cases, the difference between “in-network” and “out of network” fees are minor.
