Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling & Root Planing

Although the earliest stage of gum disease can be handled with a routine dental cleaning and regular at-home care, severe cases require more in-depth efforts. At that point, plaque and bacteria have accumulated beneath the gum line, which means that we’ll need to clear out those pockets in a procedure called scaling. Then, we make the tooth surface nice and smooth (root planing), facilitating gum reattachment and preventing future reinfection.

Arestin Antibiotic Therapy

Even with aggressive scaling and root planing, bacteria can be difficult to eradicate. That’s where a topical antibiotic treatment can step in and finish the job. The Arestin antibiotic immediately hardens at the gum line and then steadily breaks down, penetrating deep into trapped pockets of bacteria. Keep in mind that this treatment, along with scaling and root planing, may need to be repeated every three to four months to confirm that your gum disease is under control.
